[editor's note: self description of the Berlin Biennial, text written for the Poster distributed in the Hybrid Workspace -th] Berlin biennale At the invitation of the documenta x, and in dialogue with its general themes, the Berlin biennale for Contemporary Art initiated the Hybrid WorkSpace project for the Orangerie. The Hybrid WorkSpace provides an open environment for interested groups and invited guests to access different modes of presentation and communication. The Hybrid WorkSpace is a place for independent editorial work, it is an experimental pin board, a discursive archive, and a laboratory. This project functions as a window onto the first Berlin biennale - an exhibition positioned in time as well as in space. A second iteration of the Hybrid WorkSpace will occur next year in the city of Berlin. An international initiative, the Berlin biennale is seeking to establish a new model for the contemporary art exhibition positioned within a major Metropolis. From now until the end of 1998, the Berlin biennale will take place in different sites - both geographic and media-oriented - within and around the city of Berlin. The core event of the Berlin biennale will be constituted by a series of independent exhibitions held in Berlin during the autumn of 1998. Also discrete and disjunctive, these exhibitions will comprise an integral whole that - like the contemporary metropolis - is informed by fragmentation, juxtapositions, and fields of tension. The curators of the Berlin biennale are Klaus Biesenbach, Kunst-Werke Berlin and PS1 Museum, New York, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville Paris and museum in progress, Wien, and Nancy Spector, Guggenheim Museum New York. Berlin biennale of Contemporary Arts is a non-profit, registered association organising in collaboration with Kunst-Werke Berlin an other institutions the first Berlin biennale. Special thanks are owed to Eberhard Mayntz, whose generous patronage has made the Hybrid WorkSpace possible.
