Up In Smoke!

Eugene Rainwater is busy building the world's first Crematorium For Illegal People in the newly squatted De Peper in Amsterdam.

Eugene said: "It became clear to me after attending a demonstration against European Immigration Policy last June that people living 'illegally' in this country would have a hard time organizing a funeral. That's where I come in, a long term fascination with death and burial made me the perfect candidate to fill the gap."

The newly occupied building used to be a school, it's around the corner from the zoo, the walls are white cement, there's running water, a deep well, one corner's perfect for building an oven and the light is wonderful. The space will be multifunctional both available for service and actual crematation, services can be perfomed in whatever way people wish - celebratory or solemn , although the permanent interior design will be palm trees. Eugene said: "I just like to add, being an artist is a way of life, I deal in reality and systems and the challenge of subverting them both. We plan to open Up in Smoke May 1st"
