Since 1994, when we first became attentive to the 'stowaway' topic, a lot has happened. At that time, already over a hundred registered stowaways had arrived at the port of Hamburg.


Like anyone we depended on the few short information snippets which sporadically emerged in the German media. While the European governments worked industriously to fill the ship-hole in the wall around Fortress Europe, we got to know stowaways and the dangers refugees are exposed to at sea and learned how authorities and ship insurers work to remove stowaways from Europe. Since then the media has reported more frequently on the topic. Sailors and their international trade union ITF have broken the silence over the murder of eight Ghanaian stowaways on a journey to France. The following trial received broad coverage and we had the chance to mediate our experiences.





At documenta x in Kassel '97, we presented a series of postcards called Blinde Passagiere in the context of [cross the border], which document the history of a Liberian stowaway. This year will see the publication of a book on Blinde Passagiere and the history of the Liberian stowaway, featuring the postcard series, and will be part of a documentary on German television.
