Because radio as format-radio has degenerated and its Public Service antipode mourns the golden days of transmitting top-down-high-culture, the ether sees the opening of a third space.
Radio has become dictated to by its format and the medium appears to be an old, almost pitiful technology. The routine of Public Service Broadcast announcements from few 'to all' and its private successors have been embraced by convex tv. with its continually re-constituted collective form. Since January 1997 Berlin's convex tv. has broadcast a monthly magazine into the new ether-gap. Digital media, pop-cultural phenomena, media politics, film and literature quarrel amongst themselves. With no illusions to having the synchronicity to reach 'all', convex tv. persistently interrogates the switch boards between pop, technology and politics.
Of course, convex tv. perceives .radio only as a one-amongst-many medium, entering new constellations under the surface of media-blending. convex tv. as groupware and event disappears behind the attention horizon, and simultaneously demands the focused concentration that radio has long forgotten. The 'Radiosalons' implemented by the convex tv. collectv (coinciding with the on-air window of academic broadcasting between StarFM and Voice of America) can be seen as a concretely spatial mailinglist or chatgroup without falling for the temptation of reanimating the 'public space'. Being the receding medium it is, radio is dissolving in the social space. Super.
To fill the gap between the local and the global and fold the one-dimensionality of radio, convex tv. currently works in this mode at its 'test-bed' office in Berlin to continue defining .radio on many levels. Introducing the social fragility of late afternoons, convex tv. seeks to bring many-to-many senses to the few who choose to participate in something that could always be something else.
Free of charge: the unstable merging of diverse media - in the shape of broadcasts to accidentally receiving radios, DIY kits for mini-FM transmitter, RealAudio archives on the net, LiveStreams, exhibitions, festivals, Radiosalons, etc. - crosses the borders between analogue and digital.
